Message from the Dean

Daphne Taras

Dean, Ted Rogers School of Management

When I arrived at the Ted Rogers School of Management as Dean some five years ago, one of the first things I did was reintroduce the practice of putting out a faculty-wide annual report. As a newcomer to this place, I felt it was important for one main reason – the accomplishments of our faculty, alumni, students and staff far exceed our reputation. My own pride in joining this community compelled me to close the gap between what you do and what the rest of the world knows about what you do.

Each year, these reports have shared and measured and catalogued our success – whether it was seeing our MBA program rankings or research outputs rise, the recognition of our faculty for teaching excellence among their peers, the postgraduate professional accomplishments of our alumni, the leadership of our donors and partners or the energy and tenacity and caring of our students. Combined, our annual reports have become a chronicle of collective achievement against the odds, in challenging times.

As I approach the end of my tenure as Dean, I know I will treasure these reports for the story they tell about a generous, wise and supportive community of excellence and they will forever fill me with pride. As part of our community, I hope they do the same for you.

Our 2022 Report highlights some of the stories and successes of Ted Rogers School’s faculty, students, staff and alumni. The content of the report is tied together by three themes: Explore, Experience and Excel.

Explore – We explore topics that drive innovation and advance knowledge that will make a difference in our communities. Our researchers have investigated everything from misinformation in social media and gender barriers in sport, while our students and alumni have discovered creative solutions to real world problems.

Experience – We offer unique learning opportunities to our students. From hands-on work with a real investment fund and co-op placements at non-profit organizations to an international capstone project in Chile, our students are gaining valuable experience outside of the classroom.

Excel – We excel in many areas: our programs and research have appeared in prestigious international rankings. Our faculty, staff and alumni have been recognized with notable awards in their respective fields. And our students continue to own the podium at case competitions they participate in. And of course, our Excel bootcamps have become essential to student success in their courses and in their working futures.

Our competitors should take notice: the Ted Rogers School is unstoppable. I like to tell other business schools, “Sleep with one eye open; we are overtaking you.” And as our namesake and patron Ted Rogers was fond of saying: “The best is yet to come.”

Thank you, and enjoy this look back at the achievements of the past year.

In April 2022, the university announced our new name of Toronto Metropolitan University, which will be implemented in a phased approach. Learn more about our next chapter.
